One of the many benefits of having push button start is the ability to get into your vehicle without having to fumble to get your keys out of your purse or pocket. This handy technology recognizes the key fob and will unlock the vehicle once it senses the fob is nearby. Truth be told, this is one of our favorite features on Honda vehicles, aside from the Honda Sensing® driver-assistance features. Ways to fix push button start in a Honda

There are a few reasons why the push button start technology isn't working properly in your vehicle. First, double-check that the key fob is in the vehicle with you. Okay, now we are ready to troubleshoot. Here's what could be causing the issue:

  • The battery in the key fob needs to be replacedKey fob with keys on it
This is one of the most common reasons why a key fob might not be working. The good news is replacing the battery is very easy using the instructions in your owner's manual. You can even bring it to our team at Meridian Honda and we can get it replaced for you if you like. In the meantime, we recommend holding the key fob close to the push button start and trying to start the vehicle again.
  • Make sure the brake is firmly pressed
In order to start the engine with push button start, the brake must be pressed. Try adding a bit more pressure with your foot and start the engine again.
  • There may be an issue with the starter
If your push button start works sometimes and not other times, it's possible that the starter in your Honda needs replacing. A bad battery under the hood or in the key fob itself could also be other culprits. Be sure to get the issue diagnosed by a Honda factory certified service department like Meridian Honda to find and fix the issue.
  • When it doubt, restart
Sometimes too many attempts to start the car with the push button start can essentially lock out the system. We recommend exiting the vehicle with the key fob and then re-entering with the fob and trying the process again.
